You tell AI to write a gripping battle scene. It gives you a dry history textbook summary.
You ask for a sweeping romance, and suddenly everyone is soulmates by paragraph two.
You need one snarky comeback, and somehow, the AI thinks your character is auditioning for a stand-up special.
What’s going on? AI follows exactly what you tell it to do—sometimes too literally.
At Future Fiction Academy, we believe creators need control—and that starts with knowing how to talk to AI so it actually delivers what you want.
Want to skip the frustration and get straight to AI-generated text that works? Read on.
AI Prompting Is a Skill (The AI Isn’t Psychic)
AI isn’t a mind reader. If your prompts are vague, AI will fill in the blanks for you—and not always in the way you want.
Let’s say you type:
❌ “Write a fantasy story.”
AI’s likely response? Generic hero, predictable prophecy, obligatory dragon.
Now, try this instead:
✅ “Write a dark fantasy story about a reluctant assassin who is cursed to feel the pain of every life they take. Make it atmospheric, with a simple writing style.”
Now AI has:
- A specific character conflict
- A clear tone and style
- A compelling hook
AI is only as good as the instructions you give it. The more precise your prompt, the better the output.
The Secret Formula for Strong Prompts
A strong prompt has four key ingredients:
- Context – What’s happening? Who’s in the scene? Where are we?
- Tone & Style – Do you want lyrical prose? Snappy dialogue? A noir-inspired monologue? Simple but active language that is unique to the character?
- Specific Instructions – What details should AI focus on? What’s the pacing?
- Constraints (Stated Positively) – Instead of saying what you don’t want, frame it in terms of what you do want.
Prompt Upgrade Example:
❌ “Describe a forest.” → Bland and forgettable.
✅ “Describe a haunted forest at dusk. The trees feel sentient, the air thick with an unnatural stillness. Use eerie, suspenseful language with short, punchy sentences to create tension.”
See the difference? AI now understands setting, tone, and style.
Even a Strong Prompt Might Need Tweaks
AI isn’t perfect. Even with a great prompt, the first output might not hit right. The trick? Tweaking, refining, and re-prompting.
How to Get AI to Nail It (Eventually)
- Assess the Output: What’s working? What’s off? Is the tone too dramatic? Too dry?
- Give AI Specific Feedback: Instead of “Make it better,” try “Make the dialogue sharper with a sarcastic tone.”
- Tweak and Repeat: Adjust a few words in the prompt and rerun it. AI improves through iteration.
Pro Tip: If AI keeps misunderstanding, reset the chat and start fresh. Sometimes clearing the slate is the best fix.
Common Prompting Mistakes (And How to Fix Them)
- Being Too Vague – AI doesn’t “just know.” Spell it out.
- Overloading AI with Details – Too much input = messy, confused responses.
- Not Giving AI Room to Breathe – Overly rigid prompts can lead to robotic writing.
- Using Negative Constraints – AI fixates on the words in your prompt. Instead of “Don’t be flowery,” say “Use simple, direct language.”
