It’s 100% possible to write a novella with AI, but while AI can speed up your writing, help you brainstorm, and generate snippets of prose, it can’t replace you.If you’ve ever opened an AI tool expecting a brilliant first draft and instead got a mess of generic nonsense, you’re not alone.
AI isn’t magic. It’s a tool. And like any tool, it works best when you know how to use it properly.
At Future Fiction Academy, we teach authors how to collaborate with AI—not rely on it blindly. And writing a novella? That’s the perfect way to learn.
Why a Novella?
Because a shorter story forces focus.
Too many authors expect AI to churn out a full novel, but AI needs guidance. The more structure you give it, the better the results.
A novella is the ideal length to test AI’s strengths and limitations. It’s short enough to experiment but long enough to feel like a complete book.
If you learn how to guide AI through a novella, you can apply the same techniques to any book.
Step 1: Brainstorming a Novella with AI
Staring at a blank page? AI can help generate ideas—if you ask the right way.
Instead of a vague request:
❌ “Give me a novella idea.” → This will give you something generic.
Try a specific, detailed prompt:
✅ “Generate three unique ideas for a novella in the cyberpunk genre. Each should have a flawed protagonist, a high-stakes conflict, and a unique twist on AI ethics.”
More input = better output.
Step 2: Using AI to Flesh Out Your World
AI isn’t great at originality, but it’s excellent at expanding on ideas.
Once you have a premise, use AI to fill in details.
Prompt example for world-building:
“Describe a cyberpunk city where the rich live in floating towers above the smog-filled streets. Focus on the political system, economy, and how AI is integrated into daily life.”
AI will give you a rough draft. Your job is to choose what works and refine it.
Step 3: Character Development with AI
Characters make or break a story. AI can help explore different angles, but you have to shape them into real people.
Prompt example for a character profile:
“Create a detailed profile for a cyberpunk hacker protagonist. Include motivations, backstory, strengths, flaws, and a personal moral code that conflicts with their actions.”
AI-generated characters often lack depth. Layer in real emotions, contradictions, and personal insights to make them compelling.
Step 4: Outlining a Novella (Without Letting AI Take Over)
Don’t let AI dictate your structure—use it as a brainstorming tool.
A simple structure for a novella:
- Hook – Introduce the protagonist and conflict
- Rising Tension – Escalate problems and stakes
- Midpoint Twist – Shift the direction of the story
- Climax – Everything explodes
- Resolution – Wrap it up (or set up a sequel)
Prompt example for outlining:
“Outline a novella using the structure above. The protagonist is a rogue AI trying to prove it deserves freedom in a world that sees it as a threat.”
AI gives you a foundation. Your job is to refine it.
Step 5: Writing Scenes with AI (The Right Way)
AI is not a first-draft replacement. It’s a collaborator.
If you try to make it write an entire chapter at once, it will lose focus. Instead, break it down.
Prompt example for scene generation:
“Write a 300-word scene where the rogue AI protagonist makes its first contact with a human who doesn’t want to destroy it. Keep the tone tense but with hints of curiosity.”
Your job: Edit. Rewrite. Improve. AI gives you the clay—you sculpt it into something great.
